Art aficionados visiting Puerto Vallarta this winter season can paint the town red every Wednesday night from 6 pm to 10 pm until late May 2009 with the ever-popular Old Town Art Walks.
This year, 17 fine art galleries and art houses located within the heart of the historic Vallarta city center have thrown open their doors and encourage the public to peruse their exhibitions, socialize with the artists and often enjoy cocktails and munchies, all on the house.
Start at any gallery you wish and follow the crowds down the cobblestone streets to the next gallery, or use the handy map available at all galleries. For an online map and list of participating galleries visit: www.VallartArtWalk.com.
Another free art tour led by Galeria Pacifico owner Gary Thompson is the perfect complement to the Old Town gallery walk. Thompson gives insight to the monumental and timeless bronze sculptures along the Puerto Vallarta Malecon during a two-hour morning tour which sets off at the Millennium sculpture (a large spiraling bronze between the north end of the Malecon and Hotel Rosita) at 9:30 am Tuesday mornings until April 14, 2009. The walk ends at his gallery, where visitors enjoy a complementary cocktail reception and presentation by acclaimed Mexican artist Ramiz Barquest, who discusses his distinct sculptures which breathe life into the landscape of Old Vallarta and explains the bronze casting process.
